Zoos Victoria is proud to announce their support of The Rainforest Information Centre's (RIC) new nationwide campaign, Save the Cassowary, launched on Wednesday, 23 June.
The tropical rainforests of Far North Queensland are home to this unique animal, Australia's second largest bird. The Southern Cassowary is vital to the rainforest as it disperses and germinates seeds of up to 150 rainforest plant species.
Unfortunately, the Cassowary perches on the edge of extinction. There are now less Cassowaries left in the world than there are pandas!
Habitat loss, road kill and dog attacks relating to the ever growing housing development in or near Cassowary rainforest habitat are the greatest threats to this unique animal.
Simply go to http://www.savethecassowary.org.au/ and sign the letter asking Federal Government to provide the funds to buy back the undeveloped primary Cassowary habitat in Queensland, zoned for development.
Alternatively email enquiries@savethecassowary.org.au to request postcards for you and your friends to sign.
